If you’ve been at Penance Gym for any length of time, you know that very little in our programming is random.
Every workout, every interval, every movement selection—it’s all done with purpose.
That includes how we test progress.
Up until now, testing day has lived on Monday. We’ve essentially dropped it into a normal training week and kept everything moving as usual.
And while that worked… it wasn’t the best way to showcase what you’re truly capable of.
So we’re making a change.
Testing Day Is Moving to Friday
Instead of squeezing testing into the front end of a regular week, we’re now building the entire week around it.
Monday through Thursday will serve as a taper.
That doesn’t mean “easy.”
It means intentional.
We’re reducing unnecessary fatigue, limiting excessive eccentric stress, and keeping movements lower-skill so you can stay sharp without being worn down.
The goal is simple:
Show up on Friday ready to perform—not still trying to recover from Monday.
Because testing day isn’t just another workout.
It’s your opportunity to see, in real numbers, that what you’re doing is working.
Why This Matters
One of the biggest challenges in training—especially in a structured program like ours—is that it always feels hard.
Week to week, it can be difficult to feel progress.
That’s where testing comes in.
It gives you objective proof.
- Are you stronger than you were 13 weeks ago?
- Do you have more capacity?
- Can you handle more work in the same time?
The big questions.
And if we’re going to ask you to test, we owe it to you to put you in the best possible position to succeed.
This new structure does exactly that.
What About Saturday?
Saturday now serves two purposes—depending on what you need.
If you tested on Friday:
Saturday is your opportunity to move, recover, and reset.
You’ll still work, but it’s designed to help you come down from the intensity of testing and start preparing for the next training cycle.
If you missed testing day:
Saturday becomes your chance to step on the gas.
The workout is written in a way that allows you to push, challenge yourself, and still get meaningful work in—especially if you weren’t able to make Friday.
In other words, you’re not penalized for having a busy schedule.
You’re still moving forward.
The Bigger Picture
This change isn’t about making things easier.
It’s about making them more effective.
At Penance Gym, we’re not interested in just giving you a hard workout.
We’re focused on helping you:
- Build real strength
- Improve your capacity
- Track measurable progress
- And carry that over into your life outside the gym
That requires more than effort.
It requires structure.
It requires intention.
And sometimes, it requires making adjustments like this one.
What We Ask From You
Trust the process.
Lean into the week as it’s designed.
And when Friday comes—treat it like what it is:
An opportunity to prove to yourself that your effort is paying off.
Because it is.
You just need the chance to see it.
