Why Coach Took a Break (And What Comes Next)

I just got back from a much-needed vacation — not the kind where you unplug entirely, but the kind where you are allowed to breathe and shift your focus.

As a coach and gym owner, a big part of my role is helping people do what they might not want to do — but absolutely need to do for their long-term health and quality of life. That’s a responsibility I take seriously. And over time, it takes a toll — mentally, physically, emotionally. If you’re always giving, you eventually hit a point where you have nothing to give and need to pause and recharge.

So that’s what I did.

My brother and I took our families and our parents on a trip to Montana — something we’d been wanting to do for years. All the guys made the drive there and back. The ladies flew. It wasn’t a luxury getaway. It was intentional time together — across generations — and a reminder of the kind of connection we often overlook when life gets busy.

For me, it was also a rare chance to be fully present with my wife and kids. To slow down. To get out of “coach” mode for a minute and be a husband, a father, a son, and a brother. That matters just as more than any set or rep inside the gym.

Of course, none of it would’ve been possible without Theresa, our General Manager, stepping up to run Penance Gym. She handled every detail and led from the front. I’ve always known the gym was in good hands when I’m not there — this trip merely confirmed it. She made it possible for me to take time away without looking over my shoulder. That’s rare. And I’m incredibly grateful.

Now that I’m back — rested, focused, and re-centered — I want to share something else.

I don’t talk much about myself. Or about the story behind this gym. That’s never felt natural to me. But the truth is, it’s time to start. Because people don’t just join gyms anymore — they join people. They join values. They want to feel like the place they’re showing up to each week stands for something.

And in a time where trust seems to be in short supply, people don’t just want a gym — they want to know more about who they’re trusting with their time, energy, and health. They want to know what we stand for, what drives us, and why we care so much. That starts with me telling the story of how Penance Gym came to be — and where we’re going next.

So this is the beginning. In future posts, I’ll be sharing more about how we do things here. What we believe. Why we train the way we do. What makes this place different. And what we’re really building — far beyond workouts.

If you’re already part of the Penance community, thank you for trusting us. And if you’re not — maybe you’ll get to know us a little better.

Time to keep building.
