Obstacles Today, Opportunities Tomorrow

There’s a phrase that’s been bouncing around in my head for the last few weeks. Simple, but sharp. It’s helped me push through some tough workouts – and, honestly, it’s been the reason I even started a few.

“I face obstacles today that others don’t, so I’ll have opportunities tomorrow that others won’t.”

That mindset has been quietly keeping me moving – and this past weekend, it all came full circle.

Saturday kicked off with one of the more physically and mentally taxing tasks. I have suspected one of our cows of a parasite issue for the past few months and we were undeniably reaching the point where a vet trip was non-negotiable.

But getting a sick, full-grown longhorn onto a trailer isn’t just a “load up and go” kind of job. For the two weeks leading up to Saturday, I spent nearly every lunch break out on the hill – digging post holes, reinforcing fencing, and making the necessary expansions to our feeding pen. All so that when the time came, I’d have a real shot at getting her loaded safely and securely. When that morning arrived, it was still a battle. But because of the groundwork I’d already laid, we made it happen.

And the day wasn’t done.

After the “need-to’s” were done we wanted to do something fun with the kids so we all went to High Point Climbing and Fitness. Two solid hours of rock climbing. If you’ve ever climbed, you know – it’s no joke. Total body tension, grip strength, core stability, mental focus. It’s a full-body effort, and we all leaned into it.

Sunday rolled in with its own demands – helping lay flooring at my grandmother’s house between the usual animal chores and homestead upkeep. That alone would have made for a full weekend. But then, to cap it off, Dorian and I joined a fast-paced game of soccer. Small teams this week so lots of movement. A hard 40-minute sweat-filled game with a great group of people.

Was I tired? Absolutely.

But Monday morning, I still showed up ready to lead the sessions at Penance Gym. Ready to coach. Ready to serve.

Not because I’m special in any way (I’m just a 38-year old asthmatic) – but because I’ve learned that real strength is built in the moments when we don’t feel like showing up—and we do anyway. When you choose the hard thing now so that down the road, you’re capable of more than most.

If you’re in a season where it feels like life is full of obstacles—don’t run from them. Lean in. Face them head-on.

Your future self will thank you.
