Today, I want to take a minute to brag on an absolutely astonishing gentleman — Mr. Bill.
Mr. Bill just turned 78 years old yesterday. He’s been training with us at Penance Gym for nearly two years now, and in all that time, I’ve never once seen him shy away from a challenge — not because of his age, not for any excuse at all.
When he first joined us, he was recovering from a serious vitamin deficiency that had caused a cascade of health issues. He signed on as a personal training client and his goal was simple but critical: regain strength and put healthy weight back on. Early into our training, we discovered he had an old injury that required a full knee replacement. Most people would have tapped the brakes there — but not Bill.
Aside from the two weeks immediately following surgery, he hasn’t missed a single beat. Within three weeks, he was back in the gym working on upper body strength, and he hasn’t looked back since. Today, that replaced knee isn’t holding him back — it’s powering him forward. He moves better than many people 20 years his junior.
He trusts the process. He shows up consistently. And he brings an energetic, positive mindset to every session.
At 78, Mr. Bill is a reminder that strength isn’t just physical. It’s also about attitude, resilience, and showing up ready to do the work.
When I think about the kind of person I’d like to be at 78, I think of Bill — always looking for the next challenge, always showing up with a smile, and always putting in the effort.
We’re lucky to have him here.
