It’s back, ya’ll!!
This time we grabbed one of our newer members to spotlight. She’s only been with us since January, but she has an incredible energy in the gym and she was happy to oblige us.
-Name: Abigail Owen
-Hometown: Somerville, TN
-Career: Stylist/Salon Owner
-What’s the most important life lesson you’ve learned? Progress is more mental than physical. I used to view how healthy I was by the numbers reflected on the scale. That is how I judged how good or bad I was. Now it’s all about how much more weight I can lift and how much stronger I can become. I still weigh myself from time to time. But the numbers neither discourage, nor encourage me. It’s no longer what is important. Being thin and able to run a mile is not always what health looks like. When I started I was very large and had zero muscle. I wanted so badly to be able to run and do all this cardio but then I started lifting weights. And I fell in love. Now what I view as a healthy body is very different. And there are not too many feelings better than hitting a new pr (personal record) on weighted movements. My progress was slow, but I was determined to be healthy and stick with this. During that process I found that I am very passionate about Fitness and having a fit lifestyle. It is the one thing I think I could quit my job for! And that says a lot because I love what I do.
-What are your most and least favorite Fitness movements? Burpees!!! I hate them so very much. But I hate them less and less each time I do them. Maybe one day I will love them. But lets not get too far ahead of ourselves, here…
-How has Fitness affected your life outside the gym? If I am not in the gym, I am thinking about the gym. I park at the end of the parking lot. I take the stairs. I go hiking with my family instead of going to a movie. Even on days when I cannot be in the gym, like when we’re on vacation or something, I have my kettle bell and I do my workout. I really don’t even know who I am anymore. I used to live for being “pretty” – always wearing make up, lots of jewelry and frilly clothes. Now I am so comfortable in my own skin that I feel incredibly uncomfortable in make up – even though I still wear it. And I will totally wear compression pants to church, now! Instead of buying clothes that hide my body, I bust out my guns in a tank every chance I get. I am proud of my body and what it can do. I still have a long journey ahead of me but I have already come so far. And it happened slowly. I did not even realize it until I was looking at older pictures of myself. I was pretty confident before, but confidence has a whole new meaning to me now.
-What is your favorite restaurant? Kooky Canuck! Fried ham and cheese….. nomnomnom. But only for cheat meals, of course.
-What is your favorite movie quote? Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind “I’ll think about that tomorrow.”
-What 3 things would you take with to a deserted island? My kettle bell, sunscreen, and my phone – how else am I supposed to find awesome Fitness stuff on Pinterest?!?
-What is 1 thing you want to be remembered for? Strength. Mentally, physically and emotionally.
