Best Way to Start Working Out at a Gym

“What is the best way to get started in a gym?”

Unfortunately the answer here is not as straightforward as some hope, as we’re all different and need different levels of support.

Years ago we did the standard CrossFit Drop-In routine. Someone stops by the gym, pays $20 to participate in a class, then afterwards (while the endorphins were kicking) we’d talk with them about joining the gym. Oftentimes they did, but then we’d barely see them again – not what you’re hoping for when you’re trying to help people get healthier and feel better in their body. 

We knew there had to be a better way.

In the last few years we have realized that most people need a higher level of support and accountability for the first few months to help them build their habits, improve their confidence and set themselves up for success over the long haul! 

This is why we have multiple options for how someone can start their health & fitness journey in Penance Gym.

A small percentage of those that come to Penance Gym are already in good shape. Maybe they workout in a home gym or are a member of another gym (CrossFit, Orange Theory, etc…) and they are just looking for what we offer instead. With these individuals we go through a Joint by joint assessment to look for any mobility limitations so we can hedge as much potential for injury as possible. If everything looks good, they can move right into our Achieve group classes.

For some (especially those with joint problems) this means personal training. This allows their coach to truly focus on where their pain is stemming from and gives us the best chance to heal that problem and get them on the road to a healthier, happier, and more active life!

And then there are those individuals who do not have any pre existing injuries or pains, and really have just not ever felt comfortable inside of a gym. They need support, encouragement, and guidance to help them build that confidence, build comfort, and see the progress that is going to keep them motivated to keep putting in the work!

It is with the latter group in mind that we have developed our 12-week Success Program!

This Program includes:

Support and accountability from your coach with weekly check-ins.

In-body scans to measure and celebrate body composition improvements.

Unlimited Coach-led group classes.

Nutrition guidelines to accelerate your progress.

In short – every thing someone would need to succeed in their health & fitness journey!
